Old Chapel

December 23, 2008 By Dale Bengston

The Old Chapel, in Boyce, VA, (or is it Berryville?) has been around since the 1790s. It’s adjacent to the Burwell Cemetery, resting place of many famous locals. Lord Fairfax was here, and his highway runs nearby.

I walked here from my father-in-law’s place down Old Chapel Road. It was colder than I’d thought, and my opposable thumbs weren’t working very well. The cold also diminished my camera’s battery life. I shot fast, knowing I had to walk back home afterwards.

I didn’t notice when I was in the burying ground, but this scene is almost black-and-white. It’s as though the cold December day had leached all the color out of the world. I need to go back on a warmer day and linger over the ancient grave stones in this pretty little cemetery.

No famous people are immortalized in this shot.
