Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

February 18, 2017 By Dale Bengston

Today’s school photography assignment is “shadow and reflection,” so we were going to end up here today for sure. Proceeding downhill from the Washington Monument, we wind up at the end of the Mall at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. On the walk, we take in the National World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial before landing at the far end of the pool.

This Reflecting Pool was constructed in 1922 and 1923, after the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. It’s not without its troubles in the 21st century, though. After being fully restored in 2011 and 2012, the new water supply created an algae problem. Then in 2013, construction of the National World War II Memorial damaged the pool. It was drained again this year to combat a parasite that was killing off ducklings.

Oh well, just don’t go in the water. Stay on the deck and enjoy the amazing view. And don’t forget to turn around and enjoy the Lincoln Memorial, too.

No famous people are immortalized in this shot. There was one with me, but as tired as she was, she managed to stay behind the camera.
