Tower of London

June 28, 2012 By Dale Bengston

There’s something pleasing about the buildings that make up the Tower of London, and it was a great day for panorama shooting. I love it here. I could sit in this courtyard all day. It’s so modern in many ways, it’s a surprise to remember it was started by William the Conqueror 1,000 years ago.

Not nearly 1,000 years ago (33 actually), I was here with a high school tour group. It’s a brain twist to walk these ancient pathways with my own kids now. The notion of coming back some day with my kids was not a consideration when I was sixteen.

Once we’d seen the Crown Jewels, I had a long discussion about security and all the hidden eyes that were probably on us there. The Tower appears to be wide open to visitors, but I expect there would be a pretty fast influx of uniformed personnel if anyone tried to mess with the Jewels. (Later in the summer, we all got into the BBC’s Sherlock, which addresses this very subject in the episode titled “The Reichenbach Fall“).

We are here just before the Olympics. (The Tower Bridge has some big Olympic rings on it – you can make them out in the background.) I’m glad we’ll be gone before the games begin. Wimbledon is on though!

Three famous people are immortalized in this shot. You have to look closely.
