Fort Point was one of the first places I visited when I moved to the Bay Area in 1988. In spite of its appeal, I never once made it back to this spot in the six years I lived here.
Mount Vernon
Built by George’s father Augustus Washington in 1735, Mount Vernon first passed to George’s brother Lawrence, and then to George in 1752.
Space Needle
I wasn’t traveling with my pano gear when we decided to make a whirlwind trip to Seattle to see some baseball. But baseball games take up a small part of one’s day, and there was plenty of Seattle to see in between. It was a beautiful summer weekend, and as we rode the monorail across […]
Longenecker Gardens
School is closed for two days (the WEAC teachers’ conference), so we took advantage of the fine autumn weather to get out of the house. We came to a familiar spot – the UW Arboretum. There are many interesting places to explore here, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. Today, we end up […]
Adirondack Porch
A classic feature of any venerable old house on Lake George is a large wraparound porch. I could spend all day here… and I have several times. If it’s a Tuesday morning, wave to the folks on “The Mo.” Warning/Guarantee/Disclaimer: This is a big, multi-resolution panorama. It may take a while to load. For amazing […]
United States Capitol
The United States Capitol building was particularly festive on this December day. Just two days after Christmas, the giant tree still stood in the courtyard. And the building itself is being transformed with bunting and scaffolding for the inauguration of Barack Obama next month.
Old Chapel
The Old Chapel (or is it Cunningham Chapel?), in Boyce, VA, (or is it Berryville, or Millwood?) has been around since the 1790s. It’s adjacent to the Burwell Cemetery, resting place of many famous locals. Lord Fairfax was here, and his highway runs nearby. I walked here from my father-in-law’s place down Old Chapel Road. […]
Lipan Point, Grand Canyon
Ending our Grand Canyon view in the same place we got our first view – Lipan Point. Convinced by another father and son that the best view from Lipan Point was from an outcropping involving a modest climb, we set off. We’ll see how I do with a tripod and a ten year old. Even […]
Hermit’s Rest, Grand Canyon
Hermit’s Rest is as far west as we could get in the park without a back-country permit. It’s only accessible by walking or taking the shuttle buses from downtown Grand Canyon.
Hopi Point, Grand Canyon
Hopi Point is another of the fantastic lookouts along the route from downtown Grand Canyon to Hermit’s Rest. After a couple days looking at these vistas, my brain overloads and I start looking at the micro rather than the macro.
Powell Point, Grand Canyon
Riding the Hermit Road shuttle bus on our way to Hermit’s Rest, Powell Point is our first jump-off. There is a nice family from Texas enjoying the view when we arrive – they are much further out on the point of Powell Point than I can manage. By the time I get set up to […]
Devil’s Lake State Park
I’ve spent many a blissful summer day at Devil’s Lake State Park (near Baraboo, WI), but this was my first winter visit. Strange to walk out over the surface of the lake.
